US President Donald Trump has claimed without evidence that the women who cornered a Republican senator in a lift to protest Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination were “paid for by Soros and others”.
The tweet was a reference to US-Hungarian billionaire George Soros, whose philanthropy for left-wing liberal causes has made him an enemy of the far-right.
“The very rude elevator screamers are paid professionals only looking to make Senators look bad. Don’t fall for it! Also, look at all of the professionally made identical signs. Paid for by Soros and others. These are not signs made in the basement from love!” Trump tweeted, adding the hashtag “#Troublemakers”.
More than 300 people were arrested at the US Capitol on Thursday during protests against the Supreme Court nominee, who has been accused of sexual assault by three women, local media reported.
Video footage shared online showed Republican Senator Orrin Hatch reprimanding protesters who cornered him in an elevator, telling them to “grow up”.
The images resembled a similar protest earlier in the week, when Jeff Flake, also a Republican senator, was confronted by protesters who said they had been the victims of sexual assault as he stood in a lift.
Kavanaugh’s nomination has been hugely controversial in the United States; it has fed into the ongoing #MeToo debate on sexual assault, while also drawing parallels to a 1991 testimony to the Judiciary Committee by Anita Hill, who accused Clarence Thomas – who now sits on the Supreme Court – of sexual harrassment.
Psychology professor Dr Christine Blasey Ford testified at a Senate judiciary hearing last month that Kavanaugh had drunkenly attempted to rape her when they were both in high school.
Two other women have also come forward with allegations against Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh angrily and tearfully denied Ford’s charges at the hearing, accusing Democrats of an “orchestrated hit” on him fuelled by “revenge on behalf of the Clintons”.
