Ooredoo has announced a new partnership with Munich-based Giesecke+Devrient Mobile Security, to launch the eSIM ‘AirOn’ system.
This comes as part of Ooredoo’s continued investment in the latest technology for Qatar, the company has said in a statement.
eSIM is a revolutionary technology that allows a mobile phone to work without a physical SIM card and enables users to switch between their private and business numbers without needing to physically swap SIM cards.
With the new AirOn system provided by G+D Mobile Security, Ooredoo will be able to offer a “seamless digital purchasing experience for the eSIM switch, as the entire eSIM transaction can be handled via the Ooredoo eShop for Ooredoo customers”, the statement notes.
Talking about the partnership, Waleed al-Sayed, Ooredoo’s CEO, said: “Thanks to this advanced solution from G+D Mobile Security, we will be able to ensure Ooredoo Qatar can connect to eSIM services effortlessly with superior safety and perfect control. We look forward to offering eSIM services to our customers and promise to invest further to ensure everyone can get the most out of this exciting new technology.”
As well as smartphones, the rise of eSIM technology across Qatar will be crucial for the Internet of Things (IoT). Without the need for a physical SIM card, many small devices, such as watches and other wearables, will be able to connect to Ooredoo’s Supernet network, completely transforming the digital experience at home or the office, the
statement adds.
Carsten Wengel, vice-president and head of the EMEA Region at G+D Mobile Security GmbH, said: “We are very pleased to be selected by Ooredoo Qatar, one of the leading telecom groups in the Middle East and beyond. The long-term partnership with Ooredoo, now expanded to the eSIM management, shows that it is strategic in carriers’ digital transformation. With our platform, operators can be more agile and scale quickly to the need of the IoT.”
Ooredoo has said its eSIM will be offered to customers as soon as device manufacturers enable their software.
