An Indian yachtsman is stable and doing well after he was injured during an around-the-world sailing race and rescued after two days adrift in the Indian Ocean, a spokesman for the Indian Navy said Wednesday.
The 39-year-old Indian Navy officer suffered a back injury when the mast of his 10-metre vessel, Thuriya, was broken in extreme weather on Saturday. Immobilized, he sent out an SOS to race organizers and
was picked up on Monday by a French fishing vessel.
Abhilash Tomy, 39, a decorated officer of the Indian Navy, was being treated at the medical centre at I'lle Amsterdam, spokesman DK Sharma said.
"I spoke to him today. He is doing okay," Sharma said.
"His back injury is not too bad," the Navy posted on Twitter on Tuesday.
A storm produced up to 14-metre high waves during the Golden Globe Race, which involves a gruelling solo 30,000-mile circumnavigation of the globe in a yacht with no modern technology except communication equipment.
The 55-square-kilometre I'lle Amsterdam does not have an airport. An Indian Navy vessel is on its way to retrieve Tomy, though it is not clear when it will arrive, Sharma said.
