His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani will deliver a speech today at the opening session of the UN General Assembly 73 that is expected to touch on Qatar's positions on the key issues in the Arab and international arenas, the official Qatar News Agency reported on Monday.
In assertion of Doha's support to the lofty goals and noble mission of the United Nations and its affiliated organisations, His Highness the Amir is heading Qatar's delegation to the meetings of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 73), which will kick off in New York today.
The Amir's participation in the meetings of the UNGA 73 has stemmed from his keenness on Qatar attending all such international events, to discuss and exchange views on key regional and international issues, and discuss ways to address the challenges facing humankind and development throughout the world, and bring about peace and ensure human rights everywhere.
This is the second time that His Highness the Amir will speak from the UN, while Qatar is being subjected to an unjust siege and a propaganda campaign of fabrications and false accusations that no one has believed.
Qatar has been able to overcome the effects of the blockade on the strength of the solidarity and unity of the people behind their leadership as well as its steadfastness and adherence to sovereignty and independence, and strategic economic planning and deep-rooted diplomatic relations with various countries and international institutions. Qatar has ramped up local food production and has managed to meet industrial and economic needs.
The Amir's speech before the UN General Assembly is an opportunity to reaffirm all the peaceful and human values and principles that Qatar believes in and pursues to achieve peace, security, stability and development all over the globe.
The address also provides the opportunity to convey and highlight the reality of the Qatari position, which is subjected to a campaign of lies and fabrications aimed at linking terrorism with Qatar, while the clear truth is that the country is keen to work and co-operate with various UN bodies related to combating terrorism. To this end, it followed a comprehensive approach involving the consolidation of a culture of peace, tolerance and dialogue among civilisations, cultures and religions.
At a time when Qatar condemns all forms of extremism and terrorism, it is keen to distinguish between terrorism and the legitimate struggle of peoples for their rights and independence. Qatar also refuses to deal with this phenomenon by double standards or based on the perpetrators' identity.
The entire international community attests to the efforts of Qatar and its role in combating terrorism. The latest testimony in this regard was that issued by the US Department of State a few days ago, when it lauded the efforts made by Qatar in the fight against terrorism and its financing over the past year. It said in its annual report that Qatar is an important and active partner in this regard with the United Nations and international and regional organisations, and implemented a strategy to counter violent extremism by promoting education in poor communities.
It is expected that His Highness the Amir’s speech at the opening session of the UNGA will renew Qatar's firm stance towards the Arab, Islamic and international issues and rights and ways of settling the conflicts that the world is facing.
