Gulf Lights defeated Talib XII by seven wickets in the inaugural match of the Zaffran Cafe Cricket Tournament 2018 at the West Bay Cricket Complex.
The tournament is being played with new rules, including the introduction of Powerplay for first six overs in the Veteran’s Cricket.
After winning the toss, Talib XII captain Maqsood elected to bat, but were rocked by Gulf Lights captain Mohamed, who took three quick wickets. In the Powerplay, Talib XII scored 30 runs for the loss of four wickets.
Gulf Lights bowlers never allowed Talib XII batsman to score freely and took wickets at regular intervals. Talib were finally bowled out for 90 runs in the 18th over. Feroz was their top-scorer with 24 runs (2 sixes). Firnas and Waqar were the other batsmen who registered double digit scores.
For Gulf Lights, Mohamed and Ibrahim scalped three wickets each in the allotted three overs. Shariq and Mohan took two wickets each, while Nadeem claimed one wicket.
In reply, Gulf Lights breezed past the target in the 10th over for the loss of four wickets. Adam was the top-scorer with 25 runs (three sixes, one four) from 11 balls. Baba contributed 22 runs (three sixes), while Sabir and Mohamed scored 12 runs each.
For Talib XII, Ehsan took 2 wickets, while Feroz and Abid scalped a wicket each.
For his all-round performance, Mohamed of Gulf Lights was adjudged Man of the Match.  
In the other match played on the day, Oryx Challengers defeated IIS by nine wickets. Oryx bundled out IIS for 103 runs in 18.3 overs, with Ashfaq scoring 20 runs (two sixes and a four) in 14 balls. Mahaveer and Jignesh took two wickets each.
In reply, Jignesh shone with the bat too scoring an 18-ball 36 (three sixes and two fours), while Vimal added 28 runs (three sixes) in 18 balls, as Oryx reached the target in 12.4 overs for the loss of two wickets. Jignesh was adjudged Man of the Match.
Also on the day, Allianz B defeated McDonald by 17 runs. After putting 157 runs on the board, Allianz B managed to bundle out McDonald for 140 runs in 19.3 overs. Sandesh was the pick of the players for Allianz B, scoring 24 runs before scalping three wickets for 15 runs to pick up the Man of the Match award.
Zaffran Café Business Development manager Siddiq Fahad inaugurated the tournament in presence Qatar Veterans Cricket officials, players and match officials.
