Chelsea and Liverpool kept their perfect records intact after fifth straight wins yesterday, while champions Manchester City stayed in touch.
Liverpool won 2-1 at Tottenham in the early kick-off through goals by Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino.
Chelsea then came from behind to beat Cardiff 4-1 at Stamford Bridge, with Eden Hazard scoring a hat-trick.
The two sides are level on 15 points, with Chelsea sitting in first place thanks to a marginally better goal difference.
The pair are two points better off than champions Manchester City, who beat Fulham 3-0, but Watford, the other team who began the day with maximum points, lost 2-1 at home to Manchester United.
Liverpool were good value for their win at Tottenham, surviving a late scare to continue their best start to a Premier League season.
Wijnaldum headed them in front late in the first half — a goal awarded by goalline technology — and Firmino scored from inches out nine minutes into the second period after good work from Sadio Mane.
Eric Lamela pulled one back for Spurs in injury time but Liverpool held on.
“That was very, very good,” Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. “It was an intense job to do and the boys did it.
“We deserved to win that game today. Over 85 minutes we were really dominant. That was our best game of the season and the performance was much better than the result.”
Tottenham, who won their first three games, fall to sixth, six points behind Liverpool, but manager Mauricio Pochettino said there was no reason to get downhearted.
“Of course I am disappointed with the result but we must keep working and improving,” he said. “Today was a competitive game you can win or you can lose. There are lots of games ahead.
“There are lots of things to assess and analyse — it’s early in the season and this is a moment to be cool and calm. Is this a tough time? Listen, don’t worry about me.”
Cardiff took a surprise lead at Chelsea through Sol Bamba but Hazard quickly wiped out the advantage and then added a second before half-time.
Hazard’s third goal came from the penalty spot 10 minutes from time after Willian was fouled by Bamba.
Willian, who came on with just over 20 minutes to go, then added a fourth to complete the victory, with manager Maurizio Sarri singing Hazard’s praises.
“Eden Hazard is unique,” he said. “I thought he was one of the best in Europe — but now I am changing my mind as maybe now he is the best in Europe.”
Leroy Sane, restored to the Manchester City starting line-up, opened the scoring against Fulham, with David Silva and fit-again Raheem Sterling finishing off the win.
“After an international break it’s always a mystery how you’ll come back, and Fulham asked us a lot of questions,” City manager Pep Guardiola said.
“They will have a good season and I want to give Fulham a lot of credit. But we were aggressive when we had the ball and we created chances.”
United were 2-0 up at Watford within an hour through Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling.
But though Andre Gray pulled one back, it was too little too late to prevent Watford’s first dropped points of the season.
Ryan Fraser scored twice as Bournemouth continued their fine start to the season with a 4-2 win over Leicester, who had Wes Morgan sent off in the second half.
Joshua King and Adam Smith had the hosts four up before the 10 men cut the deficit through James Maddison and Marc Albrighton.
Granit Xhaka and Mesut Oezil were on the scoresheet for Arsenal as they won 2-1 at Newcastle despite Ciaran Clark’s late consolation.
Crystal Palace moved away from trouble thanks to Wilfried Zaha earning a 1-0 victory at Huddersfield.
