Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) launched Wednesday a campaign to raise QR10mn for the victims of an earthquake that hit Indonesian island Lombok.
Secretary-General of QRCS, Ali bin Hassan al-Hammadi, said during a press conference held Wednesday that the campaign aims to bring to relief the island, hit by earthquakes that caused a large number of casualties and damage.
The QRCS said that their team have begun working on determining the needs of those affected with an initial amount of $200,000.
They called on the Qatari society and official institutions to donate to help find homes for those in need of shelter.
For his part, Executive Director of Relief and International Development Division Dr Mohamed Salah Ibrahim described conditions in the island as tragic, adding that their team confirmed that the death toll has reached 515 and that 7,000 others were injured.
There were also 417,000 people displaced by the earthquake, with 72,000 homes destroyed.
