Italy’s Gianni Moscon, who was thrown off this year’s Tour de France after an altercation with another rider, was banned for five weeks by world cycling’s governing body yesterday.
The Team Sky cyclist, a teammate of Tour champion Geraint Thomas and four-time winner Chris Froome, was involved in a fracas with Fortuneo’s Elie Gesbert during the 15th stage of last month’s race.
Tour officials said the Italian used heavy-handed tactics when Gesbert tried to help his team leader, Warren Barguil, join an early breakaway in the 181.5km stage from Millau to Carcassonne.
“Mr Moscon accepted his responsibility for the incident and will serve a period of suspension of 5 weeks starting from 8 August to 12 September 2018,” the International Cycling Union (UCI) said in a statement.
Race commissaires classed the incident as a “particularly serious aggression” and threw the 24-year-old Italian off the race shortly after the stage.
“I accept the suspension given to me by the UCI. I reacted in the heat of the moment and it was never my intention to hit the rider. As the footage shows I didn’t make contact, but I regret my actions and I have already apologised to both Elie Gesbert and Team Fortuneo Samsic for the incident,” said Moscon, in quotes posted on Team Sky’s website. “This incident obviously happened during one of the most challenging races the team has ever faced,” said Team Sky boss Dave Brailsford. 
“We are confident that Gianni truly regrets his actions and has learnt from this episode.
“Gianni is still a relatively young rider at the start of his career and we will continue to give him the help and support he needs to learn, develop and move forward from this.” 
It is not the first time Moscon, now in his third year with Sky, has fallen foul of officials.
Last year he was handed a suspension by Sky after racially abusing Frenchman Kevin Reza at the Tour of Romandie.
At the end of last season Moscon was also accused by Swiss rider Sebastien Reichenbach of causing him to crash in an Italian race, an incident for which he escaped sanctions.
Moscon finished an impressive fifth at Paris-Roubaix last year and third in the Tour of Lombardy, before helping Froome to claim overall victory in the 2017 Tour of Spain.

Lotto replace Greipel with young Australian sprinter Ewan
 The Belgian Lotto team have signed Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan, winner of a stage on last year’s Giro d’Italia with Mitchelton, to a two-year deal.
Ewan, a 24-year-old from Sydney, will become the team’s number one sprinter, replacing the German Andre Greipel who is moving to French team Fortuneo-Samsic. 
Lotto posted the news on social media quoting Ewan saying the team “has a great history concerning sprinters and classics”.
Ewan, who has two Grand Tour stage victories, said that it was significant that Robbie McEwen, the sprinter who holds the record for most stage wins by an Australian on the Tour de France, spent six seasons with Lotto.
“I spent many hours as a youngster marveling at Robbie McEwen’s victories.”
Lotto manager Marc Sergeant said the team had opted to replace Greipel with a young sprinter rather than go for a rider who might contend in the general classification (GC) at multi-day races. 
“Once again, we opted for a sprinter with potential, just like we did with Andre in 2011,” Sargeant told his team’s website.
“The choice for a sprinter over a GC rider, for example, is twofold. With a sprinter, you have chances for success all year long and the budget to attract and surround a GC rider is significantly higher.”
