Italian company Fincantieri has held a ceremony in the port city of La Spezia to mark the start of the steel cutting process for the manufacture of military vessels for Qatar’s Amiri Navy.

The ceremony was held in the presence of HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah, Italian Minister of Defence Elisabetta Trenta, and a number of senior officers and officials from both sides.

In 2016, the Ministry of Defence signed an agreement according to which Fincantieri would build seven new-generation military vessels. The vessels are part of the Amiri Navy's development programme, the Defence Ministry's directorate of defence communication said in a statement.
