Qatar has laid the foundation for peace and development in the Darfur region, Sudan's Presidential Envoy for Diplomatic Contact and Negotiation for Darfur Dr Amin Hassan Omer has stressed.
In an interview with Qatari newspaper Arrayah, Dr Omer lauded Qatar's support to Sudan to overcome the years of conflict which broke out in the region in 2003 and left hundreds of thousands dead and injured.
He also praised Qatar for its keenness in fulfilling its commitments and following up closely the developments in Darfur.
Dr Omer said Qatar has played a pivotal role through the "Doha Document for Peace in Darfur" in ending a complex conflict and has fulfilled its obligations by sponsoring periodic negotiations and meetings to follow up implementation of the Document, as well as various development programmes to serve the people of Darfur.
On the other hand, Dr Omer said that the Sudanese government continues to negotiate with armed movements that have not yet joined Doha peace document in order to persuade them to join the knees of the signatories to the document.
He explained that the government wants to close the file on military action to make the world realise that stability has returned to Darfur, noting that the government is now thinking about the return of displaced people and refugees and the development programmes, and wants these movements to become part of this work not an opponent.
Dr Omer reaffirmed that Darfur crisis is over and there is no longer a crisis as it was at the beginning, noting that there are steps are taken to normalise conditions such as the return of displaced persons and refugees, and that the government is currently looking into steps to remove the effects of the crisis.
