The annual number of deaths in Qatar decreased by 9.9% in May this year compared to May 2017, and traffic violations decreased by an annual rate of 58.2%. Accordingly the number of traffic accidents and road traffic accident deaths decreased by 1.3% and 16.7% respectively as compared to May 2017, figures released by the government said.

The 53rd issue of 'Qatar; Monthly Statistics' bulletin issued by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics, highlights the most important statistical changes witnessed by the country during May 2018 in addition to some extracts from the results of the 2015 Census.
With regards to vital statistics, a total number of 2,148 live births has been registered during May 2018, yielding a 4.8% annual increase compared to April 2018. However, this increase was offset by a decrease in the total Qatari live births by 13% percent compared to last month. On the other hand, 192 deaths were recorded during the same period, i.e. a decrease of 6.3% as compared to April 2017. However, this decrease was offset by an increase of 23% in Qatari deaths.
Moreover, May 2018 has experienced a decrease in marriage contracts and an increase in the number of divorce cases. The total number of marriage contracts was 303, whereas the total number of divorces reached 110 cases- that was one divorce for every 3 marriages.
As for social security statements, May 2018 witnessed a significant increase in the number of social security beneficiaries, reaching 13,837 individuals, and the total value for social security has exceeded QR 79.1mn during the same month.
The demographic statistics revealed that the total population in Qatar increased from 2.70mn during May 2017 to almost 2.73mn by the end of May 2018, registering an annual increase of 1.2%.
The bulletin showed that the total electricity utilisation during May 2018 was 3311.2 GWh attaining a monthly increase of 26.8% as compared with last month, while recording an annual drop of 20.6% compared to May 2017. The bulletin also showed that the total water consumption has reached 40181.4 thousand m3 during the same month attaining a monthly increase of 2.5% as compared with last month, while recording an annual drop of 12.3% compared to May 2017 .
The number of buildings permits issued has reached 597 during May 2018, recording a monthly decrease of 9.8%.
As for traffic accident cases, a total of 551 cases were recorded during May 2018, showing a monthly decrease of 3.6% compared to April 2018. Light injuries are accounted for the vast majority of traffic accidents in May 2018, with 89%, followed by 9% of severe injuries. However, 13 deaths were recorded, equivalent to only 2% of total traffic accidents.
The bulletin also highlighted that the total number of new vehicles registered during May 2018 was 5443. The figure showed a monthly increase of 3% and an annual decline of 28.9%.
Total Broad Money Supply (M2) was about QR 581.2 bn during May 2018, recording an annual increase of 11.6% compared with May 2017. On the other hand, cash equivalents, including deposits, reached QR 785.4bn during May 2018. The figure recorded an annual increase of 3% compared to May 2017, when deposits were approximately QR 762.2 bn.
