Under the patronage of HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi, Al Shamal Municipality inaugurated yesterday a new labourers’ accommodation at Al Shamal Industrial Area.
The new building was inaugurated in the presence of Al Shamal Municipality director Hamad Juma al-Mannai, Public Affairs Department director Jamal Ali al-Sada and a number of department heads.
Al-Mannai explained that the new building has various features that provide its labourer tenants with a good living standard, as part of the country’s commitment to the rights of workers. Accordingly, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) constructed the building to the most sophisticated international standards.
He said that the new building is allocated for single labourers and skilled labourers’ categories, adopting the latest safety and security standards. It also gives adequate space for each worker according to the stipulation of the Qatari law in this regard.
The building has adequate cooling systems, and kitchens with tiled walls, non-slippery floors, water filters and purifiers, ventilators, fridges, and gas cookers.
The space allocated for each bed for one person in a shared room inside the building is a minimum of 6sqm, with ample corridors and living rooms. In addition, the windows of the building are well-insulated so as not to allow dust and insects inside.
The director of the municipality further explained that all the rooms are well-ventilated and exposed to natural light, in addition to being equipped with electric lights, and good beds, locked storage areas and cupboards, and drinking water dispensers. The building has an emergency power supply in case of any electricity outage.
Al-Mannai stressed that the municipality is committed to conduct the regular maintenance of the building and its various facilities. He said that the new building can comfortably accommodate around 180 labourers.
In the meantime, he said that Al Shamal Municipality intents to create for workers playgrounds and recreation facilities in place of the old building.
He thanked HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani for his support to the project. He also thanked HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment for his follow up of the pioneering project.
