HE the Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, Dr Issa al-Jafali al-Nuaimi, said Saturday that Qatar has made great strides towards consolidating and strengthening occupational safety and health in various sectors through a series of legislation, laws and practices that reduced accidents and protected workers against multiple occupational risks in light of the continued technological development.
Al-Nuaimi stressed Qatar's commitment to create and provide a healthy and safe working environment to achieve decent work as one of the goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This came during his speech at the 2nd Conference on Occupational Safety and Health. He pointed out that the Qatari Labour Law No. 4 of 2004 and the ministerial decrees included a legislative system to strengthen safety, health and professionalism at the workplace.
He said that the Qatari legislator committed the establishments to take preventive measures for occupational safety and health in all workplaces.
He pointed out that the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs carries out periodic and surprise inspections of establishments.
It also carries out many awareness and counselling campaigns to reduce the risks of accidents and occupational diseases and ensure the provision of healthcare for workers and adequate housing.
Al-Nuaimi stressed the important role of the employers in Qatar in securing a safe working environment at the workplace and in securing workers' housing.
The minister said that the conference coincides with the annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work (April 28).
In this context, he noted that the ILO launched a joint campaign this year to improve the safety and health of young workers and end child labour.
The campaign aims to accelerate the rate of achievement of sustainable development goals for the United Nations in terms of workplace safety and ending all forms of child labour.
