Jonathan Robinson, a retired British social worker and patron of the Gail Trust, which ran an orphanage in Chinnammalpuram in southern Tirunelveli district, was sentenced to three years imprisonment for paedophilia by a court last week.
He was also fined Rs6,000.
Robinson, who came to India in 2002, came under the scanner after a 16-year-old boy in his care complained of being sexually abused by him for several years. A wider probe resulted in Robinson leaving the country. A red corner notice issued by police prevented him from returning to India.
The 32 inmates of the orphanage were shifted to a home run by Catholic missionaries in the region. Robinson returned on his own volition in November 2015, and applied for an ‘advance hearing’ petition against the charge-sheet.
In his four-decade career, Robinson had held positions in churches in London, Surrey, Bath and Herefordshire.

Two arrested for ATM racket

Two men were arrested by police for installing skimmer equipment inside two ATMs at Tambaram in Chennai.
Skimmers are machines that can read the unique electronic code of ATM cards and help duplicate them to siphon money from bank accounts.
Sulaiman and Sultan claimed they were hired to just install and remove the skimmers by another gang.
The matter came to light after bank officials found discrepancies in cash loading at the ATMs. Based on their complaints, police alerted security guards at the ATM kiosk to catch the culprits.
Search is also on for the gang who had planned to install the skimmers.
A bank official said: “The skimmers collect all info from the ATM card. There would be other teams to collect the PINs (personal identification number). Once they succeed in this, they make duplicate cards and swindle money.”

IIT teams to take part in events
Students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chennai have built products like a formula racing car, an automated Mars Rover for desert navigation and a robot that have qualified for international events.
The formula racing car, a single seater, will be used by Team Raftaar for the 2018 Formula One racing event in Germany this year. Team Raftaar is the only Indian team to qualify for the event.
Another team has designed a Mars Rover that will take part in the University Rover Challenge to be held in the Utah desert in the US this November.
A third team has qualified for an international robotics event at Oakland University in Michigan with their robot that can map GPS on the ground.
