The Hejen Racing Committee and Qatar Shell have signed a three-year agreement under which Shell continues its official sponsorship for His Highness the Emir’s main camel race among tribes from 2019 to 2021, it has been announced.
The agreement was signed by Abdullah al-Kuwari, vice-chairman of the camel racing committee, and Rashid al-Sulaiti, deputy general manager, Qatar Shell.
HH the Emir’s Main Camel Race is the final race of the camel racing festival taking place in the Al Sheehaniya camel racing track this year from April 14 to 25.
The main race among tribes is the top annual camel race in Qatar, and the competition attracts hundreds of trainers from around the Gulf. The winner receives a prize, but more importantly, the sword from His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. Some 6,000 camels from Qatar and elsewhere in the Gulf are expected to compete in the festival with races run over distances of 4, 6 and 8km.
Al-Kuwari said, “We are delighted that Shell is signing for another three years to continue its sponsorship of His Highness the Emir’s main race among tribes. Shell’s support in promoting this event over the last six years has attracted a wider audience and proven to be beneficial to the sport. We take great pride in the cultural sport of camel racing, and I look forward to witnessing some exciting races this year.”
Al-Sulaiti added, “Qatar Shell is proud to be able to continue supporting the Hejen Racing Committee by sponsoring His Highness the Emir’s main race among tribes. We are honoured to partner once again with the Hejen Racing Committee in realising the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 in the preservation of Qatar’s national heritage and the encouragement of sporting culture through camel racing.”
