The Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre (DSWMC) at Mesaieed is producing “remarkably good results” in the area of solid waste treatment and recycling, a senior official of the Ministry of the Municipality and Environment (MME) said.
“One of the first facilities of its kind in the Gulf region, the DSWMC is generating nearly 100 tonnes of recycled manure and compost for agriculture on a daily basis,” explained MME director Hamad Jassim S M al-Bahar.
The official was speaking to Gulf Times at the Waste Centre Pavilion at AgriteQ 2018 at the Doha Qatar Exhibition and Convention Centre yesterday.
The plant, which operates round-the-clock, is not only effectively handling the wastes collected from different parts of Qatar but also contributing considerably to the agricultural development in the country.
The composites from the facility is used for construction purposes among others. The plant is capable of recycling used tyres and turning them into composites, al-Bahar disclosed.
“Right now, the produce from the facility is adequate only to meet the requirements at the municipalities’ own locations,’’ al-Bahar said.
The energy generated from the plant is supplied to the national grid. Owing to the advanced and sophisticated technologies, more than 95% of the wastes it receives is now converted to energy or recycled.
“The main advantage of waste-to-energy is that it has overcome the need for landfills, and ensures adequate protection to the open areas of the country for future generations,” al-Bahar pointed out.
The world-class plant, which was completed about seven years ago, can treat up to 2,300 tonnes of domestic solid waste daily.
The official said the country’s requirements are growing as there has been a significant growth in its population in the last one decade and there could be more similar plants elsewhere in the coming years.
