Sheikh Faisal bin Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani’s Topsy Turvy breezed to a dominant victory in the Al Wajba Cup, a Class 2 Thorougbreds race, which was yesterday’s feature at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC).
The race saw Saleem Golam stay marginally ahead on the rails in the 1900m early on before pulling away through the final bend, and holding a healthy advantage coming on the home straight for a victory with three and a half lengths to spare.
The victory was second on the day for trainer Ibrahim al-Malki.
Hadi Nasser al-Ramzani’s wards, Vitally Important, ridden by Faleh Bughanaim, and Karraar, helmed by Tomas Lukasek, completed the top three in the race.
The penultimate race of the day saw Champion Trainer Jassim Mohamed Ghazali notch up his second straight hat-trick in as many days when Khalifa bin Sheail al-Kuwari’s Sheikspear won the Class 4 Thoroughbred Handicap event for horses rated 80 and below in a thrilling blanket finish.
Champion Jockey Harry Bentley guided the British recruit to a victory on his Qatar debut. Quarter of a length behind Deborah Mountain-trained Palmetto Dunes edged out Injaaz Stud’s Town Crier by a head at the line for the runner-up spot.
Hossin Mohamed Ashour too had a winner on the day with Ras Mlaejy topping Class 5 Thoroughbred Handicap event for horses rated 70 and below.
Marvin Suerland rode the seven-year-old to his first victory in Qatar, finishing three and a half lengths ahead of Mohamed Riyaz’s Abbey Village, with JP Guillambert astride, while Stephan Ladjadj guided Zuhair Mohsen’s Truancy to third.
Earlier in the day, four Thoroughbreds shed their respective maiden statuses, including al-Malki-trained Shobrom, Abdulla Sultan Ahmed al-Jabir-schooled Sandaan, al-Ramzani-saddled Nagham Raneen and Ghazali’s ward Masked Defender.
Ghazali’s second winner of the day was Hydroxide, who followed up his three finishes in the frame with his second career victory, this time under JP Guillambert.
The Khalifa bin Sheail al-Kuwari-owned gelding won the six-furlong Thoroughbred Novice Plate, edging out Ahmed Kobeissi-saddled Beach Samba by a quarter of a length at the post. Another Ghazali ward, Noble Masterpiece was third under Harry Bentley.
Mohanad Jassim al-Yaqout-trained Al Afreet was in magnificient form in the Purebred Arabian Graduation Plate event, winning by five and a half lengths under Tomas Lukasek.  Julian Smart’s Aaley Al Magam had to settle for the runner-up spot for the third time this season, while Faleh Bughanaim helmed Bsheer to third place for Ashour.
