Dr Daniel C Phelps, associate teaching professor and programme director for the Information Systems programme at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), has presented a talk on information security (IS) to students taking computer courses at the  Academic Bridge Programme (ABP).
The talk was in line with the ABP’s policy of student participation in events involving lectures or meetings with prominent Education City (EC) lecturers and scholars in order to help prepare its students for entry into EC universities.
The ABP is a a centre of Qatar Foundation (QF) that operates under the umbrella of Pre-University Education.
In his talk, Dr Phelps, who teaches courses related to information systems development, networking, security and auditing at CMU-Q, emphasised the importance of enhancing information security from small establishments to national institutions.
He also discussed risks, threats and vulnerability of data, as well as methods of their prevention.
The talk was followed by a question and answer session where students and their ABP computer faculty members asked questions on a variety of issues related to the topic.
The students also had a chance to chat with the speaker as more informally as many wanted to find out more about the IS course at CMU-Q.
The presentation enhanced ABP students’ understanding of IS-related problems, putting them in a broader perspective and stressing a rapidly growing need to raise awareness and increase preventive measures.
In a statement, the ABP said it aims to provide high school graduates from Qatari schools and other similar schools with the academic and personal skills for success in reputable English-language universities, with special emphasis on preparing students for the universities in QF’s Education City.
