After celebrating three unique themes in previous weeks, Shop Qatar 2018’s final week now focuses on promoting local products through 30 pop-up shops set up at Mall of Qatar (MoQ), it is learnt.
Organised by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), the month-long shopping festival in the country has partnered with more than 100 budding entrepreneurs and local businesses to provide a platform that will bring them closer to customers and broaden their market reach.
“Buying local is worth every cent. Let's show our love and support for small local businesses during #ShopQatar,” QTA said through Facebook posts, encouraging residents and visitors to buy and patronise local products.
The initiative is being held in partnership with Qatar Development Bank, which has been supporting startups and young entrepreneurs grow and expand their businesses.
Some of the products on offer at MoQ’s Luxury Court (ground and first floor) include unique gifts, customised items, abayas, stationery, perfumes, and decorations, among other food and non-food items made by talented retailers.
According to QTA’s tourism events and festival organisation section head Alshaima Alshaikh, entrepreneurs are participating on a rotation basis at MoQ, giving everyone a chance to showcase their products to mall-goers.
It is learnt that these small businesses have been getting an increasing number of orders from mall-goers due to the high footfall generated by the festival while providing the mall’s visitors with an authentic Qatari experience.
Alshaikh expressed confidence that this year’s Shop Qatar will attract more visitors and spectators to festival locations and exceed the previous edition’s accomplishments. The first edition in 2017 contributed an estimated QR1.06bn to the local economy.
Shop Qatar, the country’s biggest shopping festival, forms a part of QTA’s strategy to grow and diversify the country’s tourism offering, particularly in the area of family and urban entertainment.
The month-long festival also coincides with outdoor carnivals being held at Souq Waqif and MoQ, giving a variety of choices for families to enjoy the pleasant outdoor weather this winter.
Shoppers can still avail of up to 50% discounts on a range of consumer goods at 13 participating malls until February 8.
Shoppers who spend QR200 at participating retailers can enter a weekly raffle draw for a chance to win BMW cars and cash prizes worth up to QR4mn. The final draw will take place at the closing ceremony on February 8 at the Doha Festival City.
