A tropical cyclone that left a trail of destruction has weakened and may not hit the coast of India's Gujarat state as predicted earlier, the Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.
Gujarat, on India's western coast, remained on alert with sea conditions expected to remain rough for another two days.
More than 1600 people had been shifted from low-lying areas in and around the city of Surat to safer places, NDTV news channel reported. Rescue and relief teams remained stationed along the coast.
Cyclone Ockhi caused 39 deaths in and off the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Lakshwadeep islands and left scores of fishermen missing as it travelled around the Indian peninsula over the past week.
The cyclone had turned into a depression and may have dissipated into the Arabian Sea, a Met Department bulletin said.
The department warned that another storm was developing over the Bay of Bengal along India's south-eastern coast - where Ockhi had started - and asked people in coastal areas to remain vigilant.
