The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the National Institute of Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism hosted Qatar II Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism Conference which was attended by a number of leading experts in endocrinology, obesity, osteoporosis and diabetes.
The three-day conference, held under the patronage of HE the Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed al-Kuwari, discussed strategies to prevent the spread of diabetes, the methods used in diagnosing and treating the disease as well as the latest developments on diseases and endocrine problems.
Commenting on the most important topics addressed by the conference, HE Dr Kuwari said diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges facing the modern world, and Qatar is among the countries where this disease is widespread.

"We have to work together with local and international experts to find appropriate solutions and strategies to address this disease, and this conference provided an opportunity to share the work done in Qatar to improve healthcare and improve patient outcomes, as the establishment of the National Centre for Obesity Treatment of Hamad Medical Corporation," she said.
The head of the Department of Internal Medicine at HMC and Director of the National Institute of Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism, Professor Abdul Badi Abu Samra, stressed the importance of the efforts of HMC and others in the world to achieve a deep understanding of the diseases.
Abu Samra said 17% of the adults in Qatar suffer from diabetes.
Many of these patients suffer from complications related to diabetes such as hypertension, kidney disease and visual problems, which negatively affects their lives and puts more burdens on the shoulders of the health system, he said, highlighting the need to organise a meeting with those concerned in the medical community to discuss the best practices and long-term strategies to prevent the spread of diabetes and to reduce the risk of diseases and complications associated with it.
The consultant and head of the Endocrinology and Diabetes Department at Hamad Medical Corp, and chairman of the organising committee of the conference, Dr Mahmoud Zerai, said the event included sessions on insulin treatment, study of cases of thyroid disorders, and other related subjects.
He said the conference was one of the most important medical events that brought together many medical experts under one roof in the region, providing an opportunity for healthcare professionals to exchange experiences and learn about the latest developments related to medical research, treatment and prevention.
