Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) hosted a seminar on “Food Security, Technology and Techniques”, in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME).
The event discussed the main techniques that should be followed to enhance food security through investing in technology.
In his remarks, CENG dean Dr Khalifa al-Khalifa said: “Through co-operation efforts with partners, CENG is managing different programmes of research and consultations that support sustainability to enhance Qatar’s self-sufficiency, and this seminar is part of those initiatives.”
QU College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Centre for Sustainable Development acting director Hareb Aljabri said: “We have been very pleased to work with the MME for several years on programmes that came up with good and satisfactory results, especially since we have conducted research in the field of food security. We are currently co-ordinating with research teams to develop co-operation in the field of food security to exchange solutions, viewpoints and experience that support this field, and our next goal is to target the industry and external entities.”
MME’s Agricultural Research consultant and Technical Office head Dr Ali El Kharbotly said: “The research teams at the MME are working on the necessary plans to strengthen the mechanisms of food security through the development of the horizontal and vertical agricultural systems to achieve self-sufficiency through investing in natural resources, as well as the use of modern technology and development of the production system, and reduction of agricultural waste. The number of registered production units in Qatar is 1,290, among which 910 are active. The number of units that market their products is 362 farms, 464 fishing vessels and 2,900 fishermen.”
CENG Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering associate professor Dr Saud Ghani also spoke.
