Hamad International Airport (HIA) is a candidate for the “World’s Best Airport 2018” awards by Skytrax, it was announced on Tuesday.
“HIA has become an international hub, putting Qatar on the map of the air transport industry and becoming its portal to the world. Our ambitions continue to grow and are guided by our commitment to customer service and operational excellence,” chief operating officer engineer Badr Mohamed al-Meer said.
He noted that HIA’s investment in cutting-edge technology, hospitality and retail offerings, as well as its rich art and culture programme, contributed to creating a passenger experience that is iconic.
The airport official stressed that they are proud to represent Qatar at the Skytrax awards, one of the most significant awards in the airport industry.
The awards are a global benchmark of airport excellence with HIA ranking as the sixth ‘Best Airport in the World in 2017.’
HIA was recognised for its innovative facilities, five-star customer service and state-of-the-art terminal which can accommodate more than 30mn passengers annually.
The terminal has been described as the most architecturally significant terminal complex in the world, as well as being the most luxurious.

HIA is currently one of only six global airports that hold the status and the only one in the Middle East to achieve this. It also won the ‘Best Airport in the Middle East’ title for three years in a row and ‘Best Staff Service in the Middle East’ for two years in a row.
The Skytrax World Airport Awards are based on 12.85mn customer nominations across 110 nationalities of air travellers, and include 410 airports worldwide.
The survey evaluates customer satisfaction across 39 key performance indicators for airport service and product – from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration, through to departure at the gate.
