South Africa’s Quinton de Kock scores 59 runs and AB de Villiers contributes 49

South Africa beat Bangladesh by 20 runs in the first Twenty20 international at Mangaung Oval yesterday.
Needing 196 to win, the Tigers fell 20 runs short of the required target.
They started off at the required run rate with Imrul Kayes (11) and Soumya Sarkar putting on 43 for the first wicket in just under four overs with Sarkar
the aggressor and prepared to take the attack to the Protea bowlers.
After he was smashed for two fours in a row by Shakib in his second over, debutant Robbie Frylinck got his revenge when the Bangladesh captain holed out to AB de Villiers attempting a third boundary.
Despite the setback, Bangladesh were still at the required run-rate with their score on 64 for two after seven overs.
Andile Phehlukwayo then removed the dangerous Sarkar for a well-played 47 off 31 balls leaving Bangladesh needing 99 to win in their final 10 overs.
Aaron Phangiso was next to strike for the Proteas when he had Mushfiqur Rahim (13) launch a delivery straight into the hands of De Villiers at deep midwicket as Bangladesh started to lose momentum.
Phehlukwayo added a second wicket to his tally in the 11th over, removing Mahmudullah (3) who was caught by Hashim Amla.
And as the run-rate got away from them, Bangladesh fell deeper into trouble as Shabbir fell to Beuran Hendricks for 19. Paterson then bowled Hasan (14) and trapped Taskin Ahmed (0), taking two wickets in two balls to effectively end the visitors chances of a win as they faltered to 149/8.
Frylinck then grabbed the wicket Shafiul Islam (1) who was caught by David Miller but Mohammad Saifuddin (39*) ensured Bangladesh were not bowled out as they finished their innings on 175 for 9 after their 20 overs to lose by 20 runs.
Phehlukwayo (2/25) and Dane Paterson (2/29) were the pick of the bowlers for the home side.
Earlier, the Proteas total of 195 for 4 was built on the back of Quinton de Kock’s 59, AB de Villiers’ 49 and 36 not out from Farhaan Behardien after JP Duminy had won the toss and decided the home side will make first use of the wicket.
The second and final T20 takes place on Sunday in Potchefstroom starting at 14h00.
