Qatar has pledged $15mn to support Rohingya refugees, the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) announced on Wednesday.
The donation was announced during a donor conference in Geneva convened by the European Union and Kuwait.
The conference was organised by the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organisation for Migration.
QFFD director general Khalifa bin Jassim al-Kuwari hailed the efforts of the OCHA. He called on friendly and peace-loving countries of the world to promptly respond to the suffering of the Rohingya refugees, considering their crisis a major humanitarian disaster.
The UN and its humanitarian agencies have appealed to donors to provide financial pledges to address the growing needs of the Rohingya refugees. These include food aid, shelter and clean drinking water, as well as healthcare and immunisations for hundreds of thousands of children, the elderly and women.
