Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has offered more incentives to Qatari businesses to attract investments from Qatar, private sector leader Qatar Chamber announced in a statement yesterday.
Museveni made the statement during a meeting with a Qatari business delegation led by Qatar Chamber vice-chairman Mohamed bin Towar al-Kuwari, who visited Uganda to enhance Qatar’s trade relations with the East African country.
The visit also aims to explore investment opportunities in Uganda in the fields of food security and tourism, Qatar Chamber said. During the meeting, Museveni called on Qatari businessmen to invest in Uganda with the promise of more incentives to investors.
The series of meetings held with senior officials in Uganda explored the need to develop trade and investment relations. It also established a preliminary agreement on a strategic plan for the Qatari private sector to start entering the Ugandan market.
Also, the Ugandan side raised a number of ideas, including a project to establish a Qatari city in Uganda to be implemented by a leading Qatari real estate company. There was also a proposal to establish a Qatari Islamic bank, and investments in tourism, agriculture, and food, in addition to other investment projects such as the establishment of an open garden.
Al-Kuwari said Qatari businessmen are interested in exploring the investment opportunities available in Uganda, which he described as “a good investment destination.” He said Qatari and Ugandan businessmen can build partnerships in different sectors such as agriculture, food processing, mining, oil exploration, Islamic banking, and tourism, among others.
Al-Kuwari noted that Qatar Chamber is keen to strengthen cooperation relations that would lead to the establishment of alliances and trade partnerships in various sectors.
“Uganda is rich in natural resources, especially in agriculture and food industries, which opens the door to alliances and partnerships between the two sides. This vital area serves Qatar’s goals in achieving food security,” said al-Kuwari, who stressed that Uganda is a gateway to all neighbouring African markets.
