The main suspect in a series of knife attacks across Munich that left eight people slightly injured will be placed in psychiatric care, a court decided on Sunday.
Police arrested a 33-year-old German man on Saturday, ending the brief scare in the southern German city of a major terrorist attack.
According to police, the attacks had no religious or terrorist background, and the man arrested was suffering from paranoia. He chose his victims - six men, a 12-year-old boy and a woman - at random.
The man, who police said may have escaped by bicycle, had a criminal record, including for grievous bodily harm, robbery and drug-related crimes.
During questioning, the suspect said that the sound of police helicopters had stopped him from attacking more people.
"What meant the most to us was the level-headed and prudent manner in which Munich's residents reacted," said Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae. "There were no panicked reactions."
The situation on Saturday brought to mind a shooting in July 2016 in which an 18-year-old in Munich killed nine people and himself.
