A tour bus filled almost to capacity flipped over and crashed on a busy highway south of the US capital early yesterday, killing four people and injuring many passengers, state police said.
The Sky Express bus was carrying 58 passengers and the driver when it crashed at 0455 local time (0855 GMT) on heavily traveled Interstate-95 in Caroline county near the Virginia state capital, Richmond, Virginia state police said.
“The cause of the crash is being attributed to driver fatigue,” the statement added, noting that the highway’s northbound lane was closed and an investigation was under way.
The injured were being treated in hospitals in three cities and some of the injuries were “life threatening,” the statement said.
The bus left North Carolina late Monday en route for New York city, it added.
The driver, who has not been charged, was the only person on the bus who was not treated in a local hospital, state police spokesman Thomas Molnar told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
One passenger noticed the driver swerving moments before the accident, and he appeared to overcorrect in trying to get the bus back on the road, WRC-TV in Washington reported.
It cited the passenger as saying that after the crash the driver “just kept apologizing over and over.”
Passengers were “screaming like people on a roller coaster ride” when the tour bus flipped, it said in a report from the scene.
Photographs released by the police showed the bus resting on its roof, with luggage strewn over the highway. Several passengers had to be extricated from the wreckage, WRC-TV reported.
Eight people were treated at Mary Washington Hospital, and their condition ranged from good to critical, said hospital spokeswoman Kathleen Allenbaugh.
