It was sad to see blockading countries oppose Qatar’s candidate HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari in the final round of elections for the Unesco Director-General’s post, Doha-resident Junaid Ahmed told Qatar Urdu Radio’s live show Haqeeqat yesterday.
The final round of elections of Unesco Director-General’s post ended on Friday with victory by two votes for French candidate Audrey Azoulay over Dr al-Kuwari.
“Had Dr al-Kuwari won, he would have become the first Muslim and Arab to head Unesco, which would have been a source of pride for all of us,” Ahmed observed. “An Egyptian delegate also chanted slogans against Qatar. However, the representative of Qatar present at the elections chanted slogans in support of Egypt, Qatar as well as all the Arabs,” show host Saif-ur-Rehman said.
Haqeeqat, which aims to engage and interact with the large South Asian expatriate community in Qatar, is a joint venture of Gulf Times and Qatar Media Corporation Urdu Radio. It is broadcast from Sunday to Thursday on FM107.
