A 9km stretch of the Al Khor Coastal Road between Doha Golf Club and Al Bayt Stadium will remain closed for 18 months starting from Friday.
Major revamping works are to be taken up on the 9km stretch of the 34km road, which is part of the Al Khor Expressway project.
According to a statement from Ashghal, the work includes the construction of a five-lane carriageway on either side in addition to 10 grade-separated interchanges, fast cycling lane and shared path for both pedestrians and cyclists.
The works will enable the construction of three major interchanges. The 9km section of the road will be closed between Semaisma Interchange and near Al Bayt Stadium on the northern end of Al Khor town.
During the closure, commuters who use Al Khor Coastal Road to travel between Semaisma Interchange and Al Khor City, will be required to use Semaisma Road, North Road, and Al Khor Road to reach their respective destinations (as shown on the map).
Road users heading from Al Khor to Doha, and wishing to use the open part of Al Khor Coastal Road, can use Al Shamal Road and exit from Umm Garn Interchange (Exit 29).
Road users who want to reach the West Bay area, Qatar University and Lusail City can continue on Al Shamal Road and use Izghawa Interchange, while those who want to reach Al Kharaitiyat, Al Ebb and Leabaib can use Al Kharaitiyat Interchange.
Commuters who want to reach Al Kheesa and Jeryan Jenaihat can use Al Kheesa Interchange.
The alternative route includes Semaisma Road and Al Khor Road, both consisting of three-lane dual carriageways, in addition to North Road, which is one of the expressway projects developed by Ashghal.
The North Road has a four-lane carriageway in each direction.
If the journey time between Al Khor and Semaisma usually takes about 15 minutes, the alternative route would take an additional five to 10 minutes.
Ashghal will install new road signs to guide motorists about the closure and alternative roads.
The closed section of Al Khor Coastal Road will include the construction of three new interchanges that will provide free flow movement in all directions.
Semaisma Interchange, which is a two-level interchange with Al Khor Expressway at grade and Semaisma Road as flyover, is one of them.
The  other one is Tenbek Interchange, which is a two-level project with Al Khor Expressway at grade and a flyover connecting the Tenbek district with Halat Awbair district to the east of Al Khor Expressway.
The final one is a two-level interchange that will be built close to Al Bayt Stadium and is located at the intersection between Al Khor Expressway and Al Khor Airstrip Road where the main road will be at grade and the secondary will be a flyover.
The Al Khor Expressway project is scheduled to be completed by the last quarter of 2019.
