The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has intensified inspection campaigns that began ahead of Eid al-Adha and will continue throughout the holiday to monitor retail outlets selling Eid accessories.
These outlets include clothing shops, perfumes and accessories shops, tailor shops, fruit and vegetables stores, sweets and cracker shops, barber shops and beauty salons, car washrooms as well as gold and jewellery stores.
The MEC is also monitoring promotional offers and the implementation of the subsidised sheep initiative. The inspection campaigns are aimed at monitoring the compliance of suppliers (retail outlets) with their obligations under law No. 8 of 2008.
Traditionally, the MEC has intensified its inspection campaigns ahead and during Eid al-Adha to monitor markets and commercial activities as well as to crack down on price manipulation and uncover violations in a bid to protect consumer rights.
The inspection campaigns resulted in penalising 13 shops across Dar Al-Salam Mall, Gulf Mall and Souq Al Ali. Violations included missing price tags, offering unlicensed promotions, missing Arabic labels and invoices. Fines ranged between QR5,000 and QR6,000.
The MEC stressed that it will not tolerate any violations of the Consumer Protection Law and its regulations and will intensify its inspection campaigns to crack down on violations. Those who violate laws and ministerial decrees will be referred to competent authorities, who will in turn take appropriate action against perpetrators in order to protect consumer rights.
The MEC also urged merchants and retail outlets to comply with laws and circulars as well as to provide consumers with high quality products and services and adhere with the official price bulletin.
The MEC also warned traders against taking advantage of holidays to raise prices and exploit consumers.
The ministry urged all customers to report any violations to its Consumer Protection and Anti-Commercial Fraud Department through the following channels: Hotline: 16001, e-mail: [email protected], Twitter: @MEC_Qatar, Instagram: MEC_Qatar, MEC mobile app for Android and IOS: MEC_Qatar
