France international forward Antoine Griezmann was handed a two-game ban by the Spanish Football Federation yesterday after he was sent off at the weekend for insulting the referee. The 26-year-old was dismissed during Atletico Madrid’s 2-2 draw at Gerona on Saturday during the opening weekend of the La Liga season.
He also received a 600-euro ($700) fine, while Atletico were penalised 700 euros. Both have the right to appeal their sanctions. Griezmann will miss league matches against Las Palmas on Saturday and Valencia on September 9.
He was shown a straight red card an hour into Saturday’s match after insulting the referee for not awarding a penalty in his favour. He later apologised. Real Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos has also been handed a one-match ban after he was sent off for two yellow cards in the European and Spanish champions’ 3-0 win at Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday. And Argentine Ever Banega was hit with a two-match suspension after the midfielder was also sent off for insulting the referee during Sevilla’s 1-1 draw with Espanyol on Saturday.

Berbatov heads to Indian side Kerala
Former Manchester United and Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has joined Kerala Blasters of the Indian Super League, the club announced yesterday. Former Bulgarian international Berbatov, 36, will link up with his former United teammate Wes Brown at the team in southern India.
Berbatov, who also starred for Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen and English side Fulham, had been without a club since leaving PAOK Thessaloniki a year ago. Another Old Trafford veteran, former assistant coach Rene Meulensteen, is Kerala’s new boss. The ISL, which will be in its fourth season, will grow to 10 teams this year.

Euro 2016 winner Eder loaned to Lokomotiv Moscow
Portuguese striker Eder, who scored the winning goal in the Euro 2016 final, has joined Lokomotiv Moscow on a season-long loan from French club Lille, the club said.
Eder, 29, joined the Ligue 1 side in January 2016 from Premier League Swansea and his six goals in that first season helped Lille finish fifth, securing him a call-up to the Portuguese squad for Euro 2016. In the final against France, Eder’s long-range shot in extra time landed a first European crown for Portugal as the injured Cristiano Ronaldo watched from the sidelines.
But he fell out of favour in his second season at Lille, scoring just six times in 31 appearances and new coach Marcelo Bielsa made it clear he was not part of his plans. Eder said he was happy to join Lokomotiv and had been guided by the advice of his international teammate Manuel Fernandes.
The club are second in the Russian Premier League table after seven matches as they bid to win a first title since 2004.

Watford shocked in League Cup second round
Watford suffered an embarrassing League Cup exit as Championship side Bristol City beat the Premier League club 3-2 in the second round on Tuesday night. Marco Silva’s side were the only top-flight outfit to perish on a night when clubs showed their disdain for the competition by making 274 team changes across the 19 ties. Etienne Capoue put Watford ahead from Will Hughes’ 47th-minute cross, only for Freddy Hinds to equalise from 30 yards 12 minutes later.
Bobby Reid handed City a shock lead in the 67th minute and Watford were in deeper trouble when Jose Holebas was sent off in the 88th minute for a second bookable offence.Niclas Eliasson made City’s advantage pay with the killer third in stoppage time before Adrian Mariappa hit an irrelevant reply for Watford.
Frank de Boer got his first win as Crystal Palace manager as James McArthur’s double sealed a 2-1 win over second-tier Ipswich Town at Selhurst Park.
After scoreless Premier League defeats against Huddersfield Town and Liverpool, Palace’s first goal under De Boer finally arrived when McArthur slotted home in the 76th minute. Scottish midfielder McArthur scored again eight minutes later and Bersant Celina’s 90th-minute reply for Ipswich couldn’t stop De Boer going home happy at last. West Bromwich Albion eased to a 3-1 win at fourth-tier Accrington Stanley as Salomon Rondon, Matt Phillips and Jay Rodriguez netted for the Premier League side.
Bournemouth came from behind to win 2-1 at second-tier Birmingham City, ruining Blues boss Harry Redknapp’s hopes of upsetting the club where he spent nine years at the start of his coaching career.
On-loan Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham hit his first goal for Swansea City in a 4-1 win over third-tier Milton Keynes Dons. Islam Slimani bagged a brace as Leicester City cruised to a 4-1 win at second-tier Sheffield United. Holders Manchester United, along with Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, will enter the competition in the third round, with the draw to be held in Beijing today.

South Africa defender Coetzee joins Celtic
South Africa centre-back Rivaldo Coetzee has joined Scottish champions Celtic, an Ajax Cape Town official confirmed. Neither the transfer fee nor the length of the contract were disclosed, and the deal is subject to the 20-year-old passing a medical and receiving a visa.
