E-Sports and Arabic scrabble will make their way to the 4th Mindsports World Championships, marking significant firsts for the upcoming edition of the international competition, Mindsports Academy (MSA) has announced.
Scheduled to be held between August 19 and 27 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, MSA said in a statement that these exciting additions to the competition are expected to make for a unique edition being hosted by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA).
“Mindsports such as scrabble supports the teaching of teamwork, improves confidence and attention span and helps to sharpen and strengthen skills,” MSA said. “E-sports is an extremely popular mindsport amongst younger players and we are pleased to be running these tournaments.”
E-Sports are a form of competition that is facilitated by electronic systems, in particular video games, and in which players participate as individuals or as part of a team.
Over the course of four days at the championships, e-Sports gamers will battle it out for Fifa and ‘Call of Duty’ titles and a total prize pool of $20,000.
Later on during the nine-day championships, word game enthusiasts of all levels are invited to take part in the Arabic scrabble events and a chance to become the first MSA Arabic scrabble champion and MSA Arabic junior scrabble champion.
Participants will play in seven rounds and those who make it to the top eight will return on the second day to play in knockout rounds and ultimately be crowned champion and win a share of the dedicated prize pools.

Battle for two titles

FIFA Tournament. Groups of eight players. Each match will be a “1 vs 1” across a single game (so a player should get seven matches if his/her group is full).
The top 4 players from each group will qualify for the knockout stages. Knockout stage will be a single elimination knockout with 3 games per match. Group sizes will be adjusted based on the number of entrants.
Call of Duty. Teams will be split into groups of four teams. Each match will be a “best of 3” using the ‘CWL’ map list and format. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stages. Knockout stage will be a double elimination knockout with three games per match and the grand final moving to a “best of 5” series.
