More e-gates will be set up at Hamad International Airport for immigration clearance of residents, said Lt Col Mohamed Rashid al-Mazroui, director of the Airport Passports Department at the Ministry of Interior.
“We have enabled e-gates for Qataris and residents above 18, but unfortunately not all of them are going through the e-gates. Once you use the e-gates, the pressure on the manually controlled emigration counters will come down,” he said at a media event on Wednesday.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar al-Baker said, “We are working with the Ministry of Interior and HIA to double the number of e-gates in anticipation of the influx of tourists.”
The objective of the smart passenger project is to facilitate passengers to complete the entry or exit process through self-service devices, depending on smart technology, without the need to approach the counter staff.
The activation of the electronic gates for residents has contributed to quick completion of their travel procedures without standing in long queues and waiting for passport control officer to verify their personal data and put the departure or arrival stamp on their passports.
This has also saved passport pages for many residents as many of them suffer from rapid depletion of available pages in their passports due to the large number of travel stamps.
