Qatar’s beach volleyball team of Jefferson Pereira and Cherif Younousse bowed out of the World Championship in Vienna yesterday.  The Qatari pair lost their round of 16 match to hosts’ Austrian pair of Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst 24-26, 22-24.
The 12th seeded Austrians, on the back of support from the home crowd avenged a 2-1 loss to Qatar at the 2015 FIVB World Championships in the only previous FIVB World Tour meeting between the two teams. Austria advanced to the quarterfinals and will play Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak of Poland. Qatar has been eliminated and finishes 9th.
Qatar’s Younoussee was disappointed with the loss and said he and his partner failed to keep their nerves and close out a close first game. “We had a good start. We were so anxious to finish the game. Austrian’s were more relaxed than us. My block and my partner’s defence wasn’t as good,” he said.
“I only made two blocks, and I usually make four minimum. The thing we need is to finish a game. At the beginning of the pool nobody expected we’d be first or that we would be in the round of 16. In the World Championships we finished fifth. I think we could have done better but today wasn’t our day. Our main goal was to qualify for the semifinals,” he added.
