Around 80 tonnes of dates have been sold in the first eight days of the ongoing Local Dates Festival, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has said.
Of this, around 10.7 tonnes of dates were sold on Thursday, the eighth day of the festival being held at Souq Waqif.
A statement from the MME also informed that the festival features a special corner where visitors are introduced to the modern methods of drying dates.
The corner houses a small chamber, which has a number of shelves and a fan, and is a smaller version of a greenhouse.
Amer al-Qihays, a researcher at the MME's Agriculture Research Department, explained to visitors, especially farmers and farm owners, the benefits of using this method of drying dates and the procedures that need to be observed.
The festival has been extended by a week, until August 12, due to the success of the event.
