President of the Republic of Mauritius Ameenah Gurib met with HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, the Adviser at the Emiri Diwan and Qatar’s candidate for director-general at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco). During the meeting, Dr al-Kuwari conveyed the greetings of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to President Ameenah Gurib and his wishes for the Republic of Mauritius. For her part, the President entrusted Dr al-Kuwari to convey her greetings to His Highness the Emir. She also expressed her aspiration to develop relations between the two friendly countries at all levels.
During the meeting, Dr al-Kuwari presented to the Mauritius President a detailed explanation of his vision for the advancement of Unesco, saying that his campaign started more than two years ago and has visited most member countries of the Unesco’s Executive Council. He also told her that Africa has a special place in his vision and that he is well aware of its importance.
He also explained to her the severe financial crisis faced by the organisation, which he regards as political rather than financial one. He pointed out that it is important to return to consensus on the decisions to achieve the advancement of Unesco. He also reviewed his plan to establish a fund for small projects, support education and science, pay attention to heritage and strengthen the status of women and young people.
On the other hand, Dr al-Kuwari met with Minister of Education in Mauritius, where they talked about the importance of quality education and its importance. She praised Qatar’s experience in the field of education and hailed Qatar Foundation’s experience in hosting international universities. She also expressed her desire to promote co-operation between the two friendly countries in this field and in programmes implemented by Qatar in the service of education in the world, in particular the ‘Educate a Child’ initiative, which provides education opportunities for millions of children in the world in co-operation with Unesco.
