Kuala Lumpur yesterday launched the second phase of its mass rapid transit (MRT) train system, which is expected to carry 400,000 passengers daily. Prime Minister Najib Razak announced a cut of 50% on fares on all the city’s train lines from today until the end of August, independent news portal Malaysiakini reported. The fare cut is in celebration of Malaysia’s 60th national day on August 31. The new 51km Sungai Buloh — Kajang line will cater to 1.2mn residents, the Malay Mail reported online. The train line is estimated to reduce congestion on Kuala Lumpur’s roads by 160,000 vehicles per day, Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak posted on his blog.
