The use of cranes in construction sites should be closely monitored and regulated by the departments concerned to ensure the safety and security of road users in the surroundings, the Central Municipal Council (CMC) recommended at a recent session.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) should also intensify its inspection tours at worksites that use such cranes, and ensure they are used only when the weather conditions allow, it was observed.
The company in charge should ensure the presence of safe and secure passageways for the pedestrians and other road users surrounding the area where the cranes are used.
The CMC also issued a number of other recommendations asking the MME to make sure that camping sites maintain a distance of at least 1,000m from residential areas.
To reduce the inconvenience caused by construction projects to the neighbouring inhabitants, the MME should co-ordinate with the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs to adopt a mechanism that determine the working hours at such projects so as to reduce the potential inconvenience to the minimum.
For instance, these companies should not be allowed to work until late in the night and instruct their workers to try to reduce the noise of work as much as possible.
The CMC concluded its sessions for this season and would resume work after the summer break.
