Qatar University (QU) has been ranked 349 in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2018, among the 956 top universities in the world.

The announcement was made on June 8 on the QS website, naming QU 349th among the top universities in the world, fourth in the GCC and fifth in the Arab region, according to a press statement from QU.
In the 2018 edition, QU performed among the top 36% in the QS World University Rankings. “Considering there are approximately 26,000 universities globally, this makes QU one of the top 1.3% universities in the world,” the statement notes.
Overall, QU improved on its 2017 performance by 44 places. The university also improved by 136 places in academic reputation.
The QS World University Rankings have been published since 2004. While the headline measures have not changed since 2005, refinements have been introduced to provide even stronger results year after year. The QS World University Rankings 2018 use the following indicators: Academic reputation (40%), Employer reputation (10%), Citations per faculty (20%), Student to faculty ration (20%), International faculty (5%) and International students (5%).
For the QS World University Rankings 2018, the citation window has been extended to six years. Hence, the citations attracted in the 2011-2016 period by the papers indexed in Scopus with publication dates between 2011 and 2015 have been counted. Additionally, employer reputation weightings have been recalibrated to 50:50.
Commenting on this achievement, QU president Dr Hassan al-Derham said: “This achievement reflects Qatar University’s ongoing efforts over the years to advance quality education, support the national economy and build human capacities who are equipped with the knowledge and who are attached to their identity and values, in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.
“Qatar University has been successful in advancing its academic reputation. The university is among the most prestigious universities in the region, especially in the field of research. In this context, Qatar University continues in its efforts to provide resources that contribute to promoting research excellence. Being ranked 349th among the top universities in the world demonstrates the high quality education that Qatar University offers to its students and the alignment of its academic programs with the needs of the local labour market and the society’s expectations.
“This also reflects that our graduates are capable to excel and compete in the local and international labour market, as well as to pursue their graduate studies at the top international universities.”
