The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has urged hypertension patients to consult their physicians regarding medication during Ramadan.
Dr Abdulla al-Ne’ama, consultant of family medicine at PHCC, stressed that hypertension patients should take into account the best time for taking medicines during Ramadan and consult their physicians and pharmacists.
Dr al-Ne’ama noted there are a number of medications that help to control blood pressure and the doctor will advise the most appropriate medication for each individual which suits other health problems that the patient may have, including diabetes, arteriosclerosis, kidney among others.
He also pointed out that there are a few steps that the hypertension patients should take into account while fasting during Ramadan.
If the medicine dose is twice daily, the first should be taken immediately after Iftar and the second dose after Suhoor.
Dr al-Na’ema noted that there are some medicines that are better taken with food, such as Verapamil SR.
He also advised the patients to check blood pressure regularly, ensuring that the reading is not high and adjusting dosage when needed.
