Lekhwiya mid-fielder Nam Tae-Hee and Al Sadd coach Jesualdo Ferreira won top honours at the annual Qatar Football Association awards held yesterday at the Qatar National Convention Centre. Lekhwiya raked in two more awards yesterday with their striker Yusef El Arabi winning the Mansour Muftah award for scoring the most number of goals this season and Almoez Ali being declared the best U23 player.
The event was held in the presence of QFA president Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani along with a host of other football officials from Qatar. South Korean international Tae-Hee edged out Sadd duo of Hassan al-Haydos and Xavi Hernandez to take home the top award from the event.
The Lekhwiya number ten has perhaps enjoyed his finest ever season with the Red Knights, notching up fourteen goals. He also registered nine assists helping Lekhwiya win their fifth QSL title in seven seasons. While Sadd missed out on the player award, their coach Ferreira won the top honours among the coaches. The 70-year-old beat Lekhwiya’s Djamel Belmadi and El Jaish’s Sabri Lamouchi to the crown.
The veteran Portuguese coach has enjoyed considerable success in his first full season with the Wolves, finishing second in the QSL standings just behind champions Lekhwiya. Whilst in the Cup competitions Ferreira has excelled, guiding Sadd to their first ever success in the Qatar Cup defeating El Jaish 2-1 and also masterminding a 2-1 victory over Al Rayyan to win the prestigious Emir Cup trophy.
Ferriera oversaw an impressive 13 game undefeated streak in the league, as Al Sadd set the early pace in the QSL. Under Ferriera, Al Sadd enjoyed a memorable season of free flowing football with plenty of goals.
Lekhwiya striker El Arabi was a deserving winner of the Mansour Muftah award for the top scorer of the QSL season. The Moroccan striker enjoyed a standout first season with the Red Knights, bagging 24 goals in just 18 appearances for the side.
El Arabi’s goalscoring feats are more impressive considering that he travelled to Gabon to represent Morocco at the AFCON tournament in January. Despite missing four weeks of action, the striker stuck seven further goals, to seal his status as top scorer along with helping Lekhwiya lift the QSL falcon shied.
Lekhwiya won another honour when Almoez Ali was crowned the best U23 player yesterday. The 21-year-old winger picked up the award beating Al Gharafa goalkeeper Yusef Hassan and Al Sadd midfielder Salem al-Hajri to the crown.
Amongst the other awards, Shell won the Football for All award for their Koora time initiative which encourages children in Qatar to play football.
There was also a best referee award for the first time and that was won jointly by the trio of Abdul Rahman Ibrahim al-Jassim, Talib al-Marri, and Saoud Ahmed Saoud al-Makalih.
