A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced a Palestinian man to 15 years in jail and subsequent deportation for "kidnapping" a woman and stealing some of her possessions.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported that the court has also ordered the defendant to pay a sum of QR6,000 to the victim as compensation for the damages caused by his criminal actions.
According to the file of the case, the defendant was giving the victim a ride to the airport in his private vehicle. However, he took a turn away from the road to the destination and stopped the vehicle in a deserted area, as if to get something from the boot of the car.
The victim doubted his intention and called the emergency number at her workplace.
When the defendant returned to the vehicle he started to attack her using a knife but she resisted him and managed to run away to the main road, where an expatriate family rescued her and called the police and ambulance for help.
Later, the defendant was arrested and investigations revealed that he grabbed many things from her luggage including jewellery, three mobile phones, an iPad, and $2,100 and QR350.
