The Cabinet has given its nod to a draft law, which seeks to ensure competitive economic practices in the country, and its draft executive regulation.
The decision was taken at the Cabinet’s ordinary meeting held at the Emiri Diwan on Wednesday.
The draft law has been prepared to replace Law No 19 of 2006 on the protection of competition and the prevention of monopolistic practices, as part of efforts undertaken to modernise legislation to keep pace with developments in this area, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) has reported.
Law No 19 of 2006 was issued with the aim of protecting economic competition and preventing monopolistic practices as defined in Articles 3 and 4 of the law, according to information available on the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) website.
This is in line with efforts made by Qatar to ensure competition and combat practices that interfere with the principles of a free market economy.
The task of the MEC-affiliated Committee for Competition Protection and Prevention of Monopoly Practices, as envisaged in the law, is to promote competition and prevent monopoly by taking the appropriate measures based on market research and available data concerning economic activity in Qatar.
HE the Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani chaired the Cabinet’s weekly meeting on Wednesday. Later, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud said the meeting approved a draft law on corporate bankruptcy and prevention.
The Ministry of Economy and Commerce has prepared the draft law within the framework of a plan that aims to improve the investment environment in the state, according to QNA.
The draft law seeks to develop a “detailed regulation” of the provisions of corporate bankruptcy and prevention, taking into account international standards in this regard.
The Cabinet, meanwhile, approved accession to the Charter of Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia. It also gave its nod to a draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) for co-operation in the field of youth between the government of Qatar and the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as a draft MoU for co-operation in the field of exchanging financial investigation between Qatar Financial Information Unit and the Financial Intelligence Unit of Sri Lanka.
Further, the Cabinet reviewed a host of topics and took the appropriate decisions. These are a letter of HE the Minister of Energy and Industry and chairman of the Standing Committee on Water Resources on the second semi-annual report for 2016 on the work of the committee from July 1 to December 31, 2016; a letter of HE the Minister of Economy and Commerce on the results of the first session of the Qatari-Kyrgyz Joint Committee for Economic, Commercial and Technical Co-operation (Doha, March 2017); a memo by HE the Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs on the outcome of the 16th Asia and the Pacific Regional Meeting of the ILO Member States (Bali, December 2016); and a letter of HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment on a draft decision of HE the Minister on the conditions and controls governing the exploitation of agricultural holdings.
