The Airport Security Department is working to implement the smart traveller system in co-operation with Hamad International Airport (HIA) and the Airport Passports Department, a senior official has announced.
“The vision is that travellers can complete all travel procedures electronically without any human interference,” Airport Security Department director Brig Essa Arrar al-Rumaihi explained.
He was addressing a press conference on Wednesday at HIA in connection with Qatar being ranked as one of the world’s top countries in civil aviation safety by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
“Under the smart traveller system, steps such as passing through the inspection devices, completion of travel procedures, weighing bags, issuance of boarding pass to pass through the e-gates and then boarding the plane will be processed without the presence of security staff,” the official said.
Airport Passports Department director Col Mohamed Rashid al-Mazroui pointed to the increase in the number of passengers who used electronic gates during the first quarter of this year, when 850,000 passengers were registered for the service.
He highlighted the plans of the Passports Department to facilitate procedures for passengers and the implementation of the electronic system to complete all travel procedures safely through the modernisation of entry and exit dealings.
“The department now has the latest systems in the process of checking the travel documents, through sophisticated devices which can identify any fraud attempts, including technological devices with high capabilities. These devices can identify the places of fraud; also the database of the devices is constantly updated to keep pace with passports of all types and forms,” Col al-Mazroui said.
Qatar Civil Aviation Authority chairman Abdullah bin Nasser Turki al-Subaiei stressed that the great support from HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications has made great impact on achieving the impressive results in the ICAO Universal Security Audit released last February. The results highlighted that the State of Qatar scored 99.1% in applying the guidelines of annex 17 on Safeguarding International Civil Aviation against Acts of Unlawful Interference. Qatar also scored 96.76% in implementing safety management and a 100% in annex nine on facilitation.
“This achievement was accomplished as a result of concerted efforts of security bodies in the airport, with the Ministry of Interior represented by the Airport Security Department and Airport Passports Department in the forefront. The competent authorities have maintained to keep all global measures that meet current standards as well as preparing the airport to respond quickly to any future developments in various fields,” he said while reiterating that HIA is one of the safest airports in the world.
Brig al-Rumaihi stressed that the achievement was regarded as a great success by all standards when comparing HIA to the previous Doha International Airport in terms of the size of buildings and the number of passengers as well as the existing security systems and human resources.
The official also added that his department has so far trained more than 1,000 security personnel to work in HIA, in addition to attracting Qatari citizens to various courses of foundation, specialisation and advancement. HIA's chief operating officer engineer Badr Mohamed al-Meer also attended the press conference.
