A child who was thrown out of a second-floor window by his parents, in a desperate attempt to save him from a fire, is showing no signs of life, the Italian hospital where he was taken said.

The Gaslini paediatric hospital in Genoa, a port city in the north-west of Italy, gave the news late Saturday, adding that a medical committee would take a few hours before formally declaring the 7-year-old's death.

The boy was from Casella, in the outskirts of Genoa.

A fire broke out in the apartment where he lived with his parents early on Saturday, and they dropped him from a height of about 5 metres, wrapped in blankets. Neighbours who had rushed to help could not catch him, leaving him with major head injuries.

The child's father, Alessio Fraietta, was also seriously injured and is battling for his life in hospital, while the mother, Vincenza Sansone, is in better condition as her fall was broken by wires used to hang laundry.

The mother authorized the donation of her son's organs from her hospital bed, the ANSA and Adnkronos news agencies said.
