Qatar University College of Law (QU-LAWC) hosted a scientific forum, ‘Legal Responsibility: Elements of Stability and Development’.
The initiative was aimed at providing a comprehensive view on civil responsibility by studying all classical and modern aspects of responsibility, whether they are presented within the general law or within special laws, QU said in a statement.
Organised in co-operation with the French embassy and the French Institute in Qatar, the event was sponsored by Ghada M Darwish Law Firm. It also sought to shed light on the future prospects for the development of the ‘Code of Responsibility’, which is influenced by diverse humanitarian considerations and has a strong impact on society as it covers broad
areas of social relations.
Attending the opening ceremony were French ambassador Eric Chevallier, LAWC dean Dr Mohamed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi, Ghada M Darwish Law Firm managing partner Ghada M Darwish, QU and embassy officials, and representatives of the French Institute as well as LAWC faculty, students and staff.
The forum included a number of presentations delivered by speakers from QU, the Austrian embassy, the Court of First Instance in Doha, Institut de Recherches de Droit des Affaires, Paris 13 University, Pantheon-Assas Paris 2 University, University of Lorraine, University of Orléans, University of Paris-Est Créteil and University of Rennes. They discussed a wide range of topics related to professional responsibilities, responsibility for the actions of others and responsibilities for damage to objects.
In his remarks, Chevallier praised the quality of the ongoing co-operation with QU and said: “Our relationship with QU is getting stronger every year. In addition to the ‘Club de la Culture Juridique’ created in 2015, 2016 saw the implementation of the Minor in French and the opening of the French corner in the International Corner of Qatar University’s Library. I intend to keep this momentum by identifying additional domains of collaboration in 2017.”
Dr al-Khulaifi noted, “The forum highlights a subject of huge importance and related to social relations. The rules of responsibility are the most important legal frameworks to promote social integrity, and to organise relations and protect interests despite of their complexity. This can be achieved through the establishment of public and objective laws that ensure the elimination of damage and the reparation of difficulties to fulfil justice and promote the spirit of social peace.”
Darwish expressed how appreciative she is towards the French Legal Culture Club at the College of Law and the French embassy for their efforts to develop awareness of French legal culture through convening such events.
