Qatar University’s (QU) Health Cluster (colleges of Health Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy, and the Health Clinic) organised a blood donation campaign in commemoration of World
Hemophilia Day.
The campaign, in collaboration with the Blood Donor Centre at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) aimed to raise the awareness of QU faculty, students and staff about haemophilia and collect approximately 150 units of blood.
On the sidelines of the campaign, QU Health Cluster hosted a seminar presented by Dr Asmaa al-Marwani, laboratory director at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital. She discussed the symptoms, diagnosis, protection and treatment options of haemophilia and highlighted the various aspects of the reliable laboratory diagnostic tests and the coagulation studies that are available in Qatar in general and HMC in particular.
Dr Ibrahim Mustafa, assistant professor of haematology at QU College of Health Sciences, noted that haemophilia is an inherited blood disorder which exhibits bleeding problem due to the lack of some clotting factors in patients’ blood. “Haemophilia is a quite rare disease and can be treated with commercially available clotting factors,” he said.
QU College of Health Sciences teaching assistant and another organiser of the campaign, Tameem Hadwan, said, “The purpose of the campaign was to support haemophilia patients through promoting blood donation.”
