A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced in absentia five Sri Lankan men, including those who had come on tourist visa, to five years in jail and subsequent deportation for house burglary.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported that the court convicted the defendants of breaking into the house of another person and stealing things worth more than QR90,000 including jewellery, luxury branded watches, women's handbags and other accessories.
The case started when the victim, who was outside the country, received a phone call from his mother that somebody broke into the house while the family was abroad and a number of expensive things were missing. Accordingly, he reported the issue to the police.
Police investigations revealed that the defendants had formed a criminal gang targeting empty houses at elite areas at the time of vacations to steal precious things.
They used some of their compatriots, who were Qatar residents, along with others who had come on tourist visa.
Besides, they used to send some of the stolen things back to their home country.
Eventually, the court convicted the five involved persons and they would be serving the sentence as soon as they are caught.
