A Dhaka court yesterday issued an arrest warrant against Monirul Haque Sakku, the newly elected mayor of Comilla City Corporation (CCC), in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order taking cognizance
of the charge-sheet.
On May 7, 2008, the ACC filed a case against Sakku and his wife Afroza Jesmin for concealing information of wealth worth 125mn taka and amassing wealth of 45.7mn taka illegally.
On February 4, the ACC submitted charge-sheet
acquitting Jesmin.
Sakku won the mayoral election after being nominated by the opposition Bangladesh
Nationalist Party (BNP).
Earlier, mayors of five city corporations faced similar ordeal after their election. They were sued in a number of criminal cases for which they were suspended.
Recently, the High Court declared their suspension illegal. The five pro-BNP mayors are of Rajshahi, Sylhet, Gazipur, Khulna and Habiganj city corporations who regained their posts through protracted legal battles after a two-year
suspension.
